He Just Believed
THE BIG IDEA · SAY IT AT LEAST FIVE TIMES
Jesus' word is enough, even before you can see it work.
Open with it, bring it back after every section, close with it. By the end they should be able to finish the sentence for you.
BEFORE THIS PASSAGE · DAY 5
John 4:1-26, Living Water. Its big idea: The tired man asking for water is the Messiah who gives it.
AFTER THIS PASSAGE · DAY 7
John 5:1-18, Equal With God. Its big idea: Jesus does God's work, and he asks you, “Do you want to get well?”
Open: Recall last time: at a well in Samaria, Jesus offered a thirsty woman “living water” and told her plainly who he was. Today he is back in Galilee. Ask: “Have you ever had to wait for news with nothing to hold onto but someone's promise? What was that waiting like?” Take two or three answers. Read John 4:50 aloud: “Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.” The man took Jesus at His word and departed. Big idea: Jesus' word is enough, even before you can see it work. Ask one person what stuck from last time.
| SECTION | THE ONE THING | ASK | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A Powerful Man Begs John 4:46-48 · about 10 min | A man used to giving orders comes begging, and Jesus points him past the need for proof. | Why might Jesus answer a desperate father with a challenge before he helps? |
| 2 | Come Down / Go John 4:49-50 · about 12 min | The father wanted Jesus at the bedside, and Jesus gave him a word instead. | What would it have felt like to start that long walk home with only one sentence? |
| 3 | The Very Hour John 4:51-54 · about 12 min | The timing shows it was Jesus' word, not luck, that gave the boy life. | Why do you think John tells us the father asked about the exact hour? |
Close (never cut it): Let the passage show who Jesus is: his word gives life, even from miles away. The father had nothing but that word, and it was enough. Name that plainly, let it rest on the room, and end there with no assignment.
PROTECT THE ENDING
If the last section starts late, drop the household discussion and go straight from the seventh hour to the close.
KIDS SIDE (BACK OF THE HANDOUT)
Story order: 2, 4, 3, 5, 1 (top to bottom) · Feelings: The dad worried, The sick boy sad, The servants happy, The household happy · Code: YOUR SON WILL LIVE · Act it out: One child is the dad, one is Jesus. Jesus says “Go.” The dad walks across the room; other children run up shouting “He's alive!”

1. A Powerful Man Begs John 4:46-48
- A royal official's son is dying in Capernaum.
- The official finds Jesus in Cana and begs him to come.
- Jesus first challenges faith that waits for proof.
His son “was about to DIE.”
“Unless you people see SIGNS AND WONDERS, you will never believe.”
DISCUSS
Why might Jesus answer a desperate father with a challenge before he helps?
Why might Jesus answer a desperate father with a challenge before he helps?
A man used to giving orders comes begging, and Jesus points him past the need for proof.
MUST COVER
- v46-47: A man of rank begs. Fear for a child flattens status.
- v48: “You people” is plural. Jesus is naming a crowd that wants a show, not only this father.
IF THERE’S TIME
- “Royal official” likely means a man serving Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee in Jesus' day.
- Cana sits in the hills. Capernaum is on the lakeshore, roughly twenty miles away.
Illustration idea: A company boss who sits in the hospital hallway like everyone else, waiting for the doctor.
RUNNING THE DISCUSSION
Listen for:
- Jesus was testing him.
- Jesus was frustrated with people who only wanted miracles.
If it drifts: If it turns into a debate about whether miracles happen today, come back to v48: Jesus is asking what kind of faith waits only for proof.
TRY SAYING SOMETHING LIKE
Jesus wants more than a crowd waiting for a show. He wants people who trust his word.
Short on time? Skip the geography of Herod's court. Keep the begging and the challenge.
Bridge → The father doesn't argue. He just asks again, and Jesus gives him one sentence.

2. Come Down / Go John 4:49-50
- The father asks again, plainly and afraid.
- Jesus does not come. He speaks.
- The man leaves with nothing but Jesus' word.
“Sir, come down before my CHILD dies.”
The man took Jesus at His WORD and departed.
DISCUSS
What would it have felt like to start that long walk home with only one sentence?
What would it have felt like to start that long walk home with only one sentence?
The father wanted Jesus at the bedside, and Jesus gave him a word instead.
MUST COVER
- v49: His prayer has no polish, only fear. Jesus does not turn it away.
- v50: “Go.” The father obeys before any proof arrives. That is the whole turn of the story.
IF THERE’S TIME
- Matthew 8:5-13 (another Gospel): a Roman soldier asks Jesus just to speak and heal from a distance.
- Psalm 107:20 (an old song of Israel) says God sends his word and heals. Jesus does what God does.
Illustration idea: Driving home from an appointment where the doctor said, “It's going to be fine,” and the test results aren't back yet.
RUNNING THE DISCUSSION
Listen for:
- Scary. He must have wondered the whole way.
- Hopeful. Jesus sounded so certain.
If it drifts: If people swap stories of unanswered prayer, honor them gently, then return to v50: what the father had in hand, and whose word it was.
TRY SAYING SOMETHING LIKE
He walked home on a sentence. That sentence was enough, before he saw a thing.
Short on time? Drop the optional cross-references. Keep “Go” and “took Jesus at His word.”
Bridge → On the road, the news meets him, and he asks a very careful question.

3. The Very Hour John 4:51-54
- Servants meet him: the boy is alive.
- He checks the time, and it matches Jesus' words.
- Faith spreads through his whole house.
“The fever left him yesterday at the SEVENTH HOUR.”
And he and all his HOUSEHOLD believed.
DISCUSS
Why do you think John tells us the father asked about the exact hour?
Why do you think John tells us the father asked about the exact hour?
The timing shows it was Jesus' word, not luck, that gave the boy life.
MUST COVER
- v52-53: The father checks. The hour lines up with “Your son will live.”
- v53-54: He believed on the road; now his whole house believes. John calls it a “sign” pointing to who Jesus is.
IF THERE’S TIME
- John 20:29: Jesus later calls blessed those who believe without seeing.
- The first sign in Cana was water into wine (mentioned in v46). Both signs show Jesus' power over what people can't fix.
Illustration idea: A family retelling at dinner the story of the call that came at just the right moment, until the kids can tell it too.
RUNNING THE DISCUSSION
Listen for:
- To be sure it wasn't coincidence.
- To prove it to his family.
If it drifts: If it becomes a debate about coincidence, stay in v53: the father himself connected the hour to Jesus' words.
TRY SAYING SOMETHING LIKE
The word came first, the proof came later. Jesus' word was enough all along.
Short on time? Skip the first-sign connection. Keep the hour and the household.
Bridge → So what does this show us about Jesus? That's where we land.

RUN ORDER
- Set the scene. Jesus is back in Cana, where he turned water into wine. A powerful official's son is dying about twenty miles away. The official comes and begs.
- Read it together. Read John 4:46-54 aloud. It takes two minutes. Ask what stood out to them first.
- Notice the challenge. Jesus says, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.” Ask whether they relate to wanting proof first. Admit that most of us do.
- Name the objection honestly. Sick kids recover, and people link it to something said the day before. Say so. Then point out that John records the father checking the hour. He wasn't just hoping; he tested it.
- Leave the question with them. The father took Jesus at his word before he could see anything. Leave it there: What would it mean to take Jesus at his word? No need to answer today.
QUESTIONS YOU MAY HEAR
“Isn't this just a coincidence of timing?”
It could be read that way, and I can't prove otherwise. John's claim is that it's a pattern: Jesus speaks and things happen. The father checked the hour himself before telling anyone.

“Why was Jesus so short with a desperate dad?”
His words were aimed at “you people,” the crowd hungry for a show. He still healed the boy. The challenge was an invitation to trust him, not a refusal.

“What about the people whose kids don't get better?”
That's a real grief, and this story doesn't explain it away. It shows who Jesus is, not a promise that every illness ends the same way.

“Do I have to believe in miracles to take Jesus seriously?”
You can start by looking at what he said and did, as this father did. John tells these stories so readers can weigh them.

Evergreen Principles
Four standards every week. The rest rotate: each lesson brings the few that fit its passage best.
EVERY LESSON
| THE PRINCIPLE | IF YOU’RE NEW | IF YOU’VE TAUGHT FOR YEARS |
|---|---|---|
| Pray before you prepare Teaching the Bible is spiritual work first (John 15:5). | Pray for your class by name during the week. | Pray for the one person you find hardest to reach. |
| Study the text first Understand the passage yourself before any help. | Read it in two translations; write your own questions first. | Don’t lean on old notes. What did you miss last time? |
| Teach one big idea People remember one sentence, not four points. | Write it in 12 words or fewer before anything else. | Test every story against it. If it doesn’t serve it, cut it. |
| Point to Christ All of Scripture points to him (Luke 24:27). | Ask: what does this show about Jesus? | Show grace as the reason for obedience, not just the rule. |
FOR THIS LESSON
| THE PRINCIPLE | IF YOU’RE NEW | IF YOU’VE TAUGHT FOR YEARS |
|---|---|---|
| Let the Bible do the talking The story turns on one sentence Jesus speaks. | Read v50 slowly twice and let it sit before explaining it. | Have the class trace every time Jesus' words are repeated in v50-53. |
| Plan for the skeptic and the grieving A dying child and a timing claim will stir both. | Decide ahead what you'll say to a parent whose child died. | Welcome the coincidence objection; show how the father tested it. |
| Let the passage land the way it lands This is a sign showing who Jesus is, not a to-do list. | End on what Jesus did. Resist adding homework. | Let quiet do the landing; leave out one more application. |

Openings, Closings & Hard Moments
Pick one opening and one close; rotate so class doesn’t get predictable.
OPENINGS
ask a real-life question
This lesson: When have you waited on someone's promise with no proof yet?
use an object
This lesson: Hold up a phone showing “no new messages.” That's the father's walk home.
start in the text
This lesson: Read v49 alone: “Sir, come down before my child dies.” Ask who has ever prayed like that.
CLOSINGS
restate the big idea
This lesson: Jesus' word was enough before the father saw a thing. It still is.
allow quiet reflection
This lesson: Read v50 once more, then give thirty seconds of silence.
send them out with a verse
This lesson: Send them out with: “Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.”
WHEN CLASS GETS HARD
Someone in the room has lost a child, or has a child who is very sick now.: Don't rush past it or promise the same outcome. Say this story shows who Jesus is, and that he heard a frightened parent. Follow up privately.
Someone pushes: this is only a coincidence people remembered as a miracle.: Thank them. Point out that the father asked for the exact hour before his house believed. Don't argue it to a win; leave it open.
Silence after a question: Wait. Then rephrase simpler, or ask them to talk to a neighbor first.
One person dominates: “Thanks. Let’s hear from someone who hasn’t spoken yet.” Talk privately if it continues.
A question you can’t answer: Say so, write it down, bring an answer next week.
A tangent takes over: “Great question. Let’s catch it after class so we can finish the passage.”
